Schools and communities
With the support of the Wits University’s School of Education, the University of Johannesburg’s Education faculty, the Bridge Education NGO, and the Mail and Guardian, Teachers Upfront is encouraging debate around the teaching profession in South Africa through a series of education dialogues.
The third dialogue was held at the University of Johannesburg on 2 August 2012. Discussion centred on the topic of Schools and Communities.

Factors shaping achievement in Maths and Science
Recently, the latest Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) highlighted South African learners’ performance in relation to their overseas counterparts. While it’s encouraging to see steady (albeit slow) improvement in their scores on the scale, South African learners still rank at the lowest end of the scale for both maths and science.

Trends in Mathematics and Science study: South Africa shows steady improvement
Much is written in the media about South Africa’s maths and science skills – or lack thereof. In a recent report, The 5th Financial Development Report, the World Economic Forum (WEF) ranked South Africa 62nd out of 62 countries – stone last – on the pillar measuring the quality of its maths and science education. This pillar, along with six others, makes up an index analysing the competitiveness of a country’s financial system.
